Luke Myer MP Welcomes £1.4bn School Rebuilding Programme to support East Cleveland Schools

Luke Myer, MP for Redcar and Cleveland, today welcomed Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcement that £1.4bn in funding to rebuild crumbling schools will be protected.

Despite difficult decisions in the Budget, necessary to stabilise the public finances, the Government remains committed to protecting education priorities. This transformative initiative will bolster local schools in Lingdale, Boosbeck, and Skelton, providing a much-needed investment in modern, safe, and inspiring learning environments for young people in East Cleveland.

The comprehensive education support package in the Autumn Budget will also include funding for free breakfast clubs across the country to ensure that no child goes hungry, and £15m allocated to set up 300 new school-based nurseries.

Luke Myer MP commented:

“This funding will make a real difference to East Cleveland’s schools. I recently visited both Skelton Primary and Lockwood Primary to discuss their rebuild plans, and have been raising these issues with ministers. I am delighted that the Treasury is protecting this funding even in difficult circumstances. Every child deserves a safe, fully equipped school environment to learn in, and this announcement means we’re one step closer to achieving this.”

Luke started his career as an English teacher before serving as Cabinet Member for Children in Redcar and Cleveland, where he worked with school leaders to improve local education provision.

Luke Myer MP concluded:

“I am deeply grateful to the Chancellor for recognising the needs of our schools here in East Cleveland. This is a chance to turn the tide for our children and families, who deserve schools that meet their aspirations. We look forward to working closely with the Department for Education to ensure these funds reach our communities without delay.”
