Today (6 February 2025) the Labour Government announced major planning reforms to clear a path for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to be built in Britain for the first time.
The Government confirmed it would be ‘ripping up the rules’ to fire up nuclear power – meaning a secure supply of cleaner, more affordable energy.
Luke Myer MP said:
“As a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear, I welcome this change – it will create thousands of new highly-skilled jobs, while delivering clean, secure and more affordable energy for working people. Let’s get more nuclear plants be built – and built faster – including right here on Teesside!”
Simone Rossi, CEO of EDF, which operates Teesside’s largest nuclear power station, said:
“As a major operator, investor and developer, EDF welcomes the proposals designed to speed up new nuclear projects in the UK and unlock economic growth. Nuclear is essential to a secure, low carbon energy system and is the ideal partner to renewables. There is a great opportunity to build new infrastructure across England and Wales, to replace aging stations and take advantage of available skills, existing grid connections and supportive communities.”
