Luke Myer MP has praised the work of the Iron Shed at Land of Iron in Skinningrove, describing it as a powerful example of how community-led projects can tackle isolation and build lasting friendships.
During his visit, Luke spent time with local members, learning more about the shed’s activities and its growing role in supporting wellbeing through shared skills and conversation. From woodwork and restoration projects to electronics and crafts, the Iron Shed offers a space where people can come together, work side by side, and support one another.
Luke said: “Places like this are a vital part of community life. They offer not just practical skills but a real sense of belonging and purpose. It’s clear that the Iron Shed is helping people reconnect, grow in confidence, and support each other through life’s challenges.”
The Iron Shed is part of a wider Men’s Shed movement that began in Australia and has since taken root in communities across the UK. While originally set up to support men, many sheds now welcome women too, with the shared goal of improving mental health and reducing loneliness through practical activity.
Luke thanked the organisers and volunteers for their dedication and said he would continue to support community projects like this, which are helping to rebuild strong social ties across East Cleveland.
