Overdue asbestos health review secured after Luke steps in

2 April 2026

A former Teesside steelworker has finally received an overdue hospital review after Luke Myer MP stepped in over concerns about his ongoing asbestos-related condition.

The constituent had been diagnosed with a health condition following exposure to asbestos at work. He had been receiving regular six-monthly monitoring, but a review due in October had still not taken place months later. After the constituent said he had been told he was on a “dummy list” and was not considered a priority, Luke raised the case directly with the Chief Executive of South Tees Hospitals and continued chasing for action.

The hospital subsequently apologised and offered the constituent an appointment, and he later confirmed that his overdue review had taken place, thanking Luke and his team for their help.

Luke fights for working people every day, and believes Teessiders deserve support with work-related health conditions, strong rights and protections at work, and secure, well-paid jobs. He is proud to be backed by steelworkers’ union Community, as well as major unions UNISON, GMB, and USDAW. Anyone needing help with workplace-related issues can email luke.myer.mp@parliament.uk, call 01287 658299, visit Luke’s Guisborough constituency office, or book a face-to-face appointment at lukemyer.uk/surgeries.
