Putting police back on our streets

More officers, more patrols, and a stronger local police presence this summer

17 July 2025

Luke Myer MP has welcomed news that Cleveland Police will receive £2.39 million in additional government funding this summer to bolster neighbourhood policing across the region.

The funding will allow the force to recruit 20 new police officers, 31 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), and 12 Special Constables, while also introducing named officers for every local community and stepping up patrols in key town centres.

The move would make a real difference across areas like East Cleveland and south Middlesbrough, where concerns about shoplifting, antisocial behaviour and police visibility have grown in recent years.

Luke said,

“This means more visible policing where it’s needed most. After years of rising shoplifting and antisocial behaviour, this is a really welcome step. I know there’s more to do, but I’ll keep working with local police and councils to take back our streets and make our area safe again.”

The announcement was also welcomed by Cleveland’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Matt Storey, who said:

“We know that visible and effective neighbourhood policing is the bedrock of British policing. When it’s done best it allows police forces to understand the communities that they serve, develop solutions to local problems and make communities feel safe, strong and confident”.

He added, “I’ll be tracking the increasing number of officers, staff and volunteers and I want to be assured that these additional resources are used in the best way possible for our communities.”

Luke has long campaigned for better resourcing for Cleveland Police and helped secure the recent uplift in funding. He continues to work closely with officers, councillors, and the PCC to make sure communities across Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland feel safer and better supported.
