Offshore wind in the North East has been given a major boost today (27 April 2026), as new rules have been passed in Parliament to unlock investment and speed up clean energy projects.
The changes overhaul how environmental protections are applied at sea. Instead of developers being limited to very narrow, site-by-site fixes, they will now be able to deliver general environmental improvements across the wider marine area. That means projects can go ahead faster, while still protecting nature.
Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, served on the committee which passed the reforms and said they could help drive jobs and growth across Teesside.
Luke Myer MP said:
“This is about backing British energy, creating jobs here at home and bringing bills down in the long run by boosting our own supply. Teesside can and should lead the way.”
“People on Teesside want good jobs, lower bills and a secure future. With common sense regulations in place, offshore wind can help deliver all three. This is about making sure Britain can become a clean energy superpower, and Teesside can lead the way.”
Teesside is already a clean energy powerhouse, with around 9,000 jobs in the sector across the region. By speeding up consent approvals, the region can bring in even more investment and create more skilled jobs in turbine manufacture and related industries.
