The Boulby Flyer brings Railway200 celebrations to East Cleveland

Luke Myer MP praises Saltburn Railtours for showcasing Teesside’s rail heritage

28th September 2025

Saltburn Railtours marked Railway200 with a special charter train, the Boulby Flyer, which ran on the freight-only Boulby line from Middlesbrough via Saltburn to Boulby. With the kind cooperation of ICL, two trips were offered on the day, giving the public a rare chance to experience this route.

Heritage diesel traction pulled the service, offering passengers striking views over Saltburn Viaduct, along the Cleveland Way and through East Cleveland villages. Standard and First Class accommodation were both available, making it an occasion for rail enthusiasts and local families alike.

Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, joined the trip and praised the organisers:
“It was fantastic to see the Boulby Flyer running through East Cleveland for one day only, celebrating Teesside’s rail heritage. The scenery was incredible and the event showed the pride we have in our railway history. Thank you to Saltburn Railtours for organising such a brilliant day.”

Mr Myer added that the success of the event highlighted the case for opening the line to passengers permanently. He confirmed he has raised the matter with Government ministers and the Tees Valley Combined Authority, and will continue discussions about the potential benefits for residents, tourism and local growth.
