An important update has been announced about the ongoing Skinningrove Flood Alleviation Scheme, which aims to reduce the risk of flooding from Skinningrove Beck. As the project moves forward, Luke Myer MP is keen to encourage local residents to stay informed and get involved, particularly as the scheme enters the design phase.
Currently, flood gates at Stone Row Bridge are used to manage high water levels in the beck. However, due to the unpredictable nature of the beck, these gates often need to be closed at short notice and remain shut for long periods, causing disruption for residents on Zetland Row and Grove Hill. To address these challenges, a more permanent solution is now being developed.
The proposed scheme involves removing the flood gates, bridge, and parapets at Stone Row and constructing a new bridge between New Company Row and Zetland Row. The new bridge will sit higher than the existing flood walls, providing better flood protection and eliminating the need for frequent gate closures.
Luke sees this design stage as crucial. It is essential that the new flood defences work harmoniously with Skinningrove’s natural surroundings and respects the character of the village. Local knowledge becomes invaluable. Residents are in the best position to offer feedback on how the proposed changes may impact the area and to ensure that the design not only protects against flooding but also preserves the unique character of Skinningrove.
Luke, who has been working closely with the Environment Agency (EA) and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council has requested a meeting to discuss the upcoming drop-in event along with the Cabinet Member for Highways & Transport and Ward Councillors. He emphasised the importance of local involvement.
“The new bridge proposal would be fully funded via the EA and is now in the design phase. It is really important that we get input from the community to make sure the new infrastructure not only provides the protection we need but also fits in with the village and its surroundings. This is a community effort, and everyone’s views matter and therefore it is important that all residents are fully aware.”
To provide residents with the opportunity to learn more and give feedback, a community drop-in event will be held on Thursday, 7th November, from 3pm to 7pm at Skinningrove Village Hall. The event is open to all, and it’s a great chance for residents to speak directly with the project team, ask questions, and offer their insights on the design.
The project team hand-delivered letters to Skinningrove homes on Monday, 28th October, inviting residents to the event and offering the chance to have face-to-face discussions.
