Today (31 March 2026) a new community mosaic celebrating Hemlington’s identity and community spirit has been officially unveiled at Hemlington Community Hub & Library, with Luke Myer MP joining local councillors Tom Mohan and Nicky Walker, and Hemlington residents, for the opening.
The 12-panel artwork, created with residents and led by community artists Helen Gaunt and Derek Mosey of Saltburn Studios, brings together scenes that reflect everyday life in the area – from the iconic Transporter Bridge to Hemlington Lake, and symbols that represent the strong community spirit in the area. Much of the design and tile work was shaped directly by local people, giving the final piece a strong sense of ownership and pride.
The project was supported by funding from the Labour Government, delivered through Middlesbrough Council to back grassroots initiatives that strengthen communities in the wake of the 2024 Middlesbrough riots. While professional artists guided the process, it was residents themselves who helped bring the mosaic to life, working together to create something lasting for the neighbourhood that reminds residents of the things which make Hemlington special.
