Luke Myer MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland has welcomed the Chancellor’s Budget announcement today of £2 billion to fund green hydrogen projects, as a significant step for clean energy development and economic growth in the region. This funding, confirmed by UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves, will go towards eleven cutting-edge green hydrogen projects, including EDF Renewables Tees Green Hydrogen, bringing new jobs and an economic boost to the local area.
Tees Green Hydrogen, a 5.2MW project, stands among the pioneering commercial-scale hydrogen initiatives benefiting from this Labour government’s commitment to kick-starting the green economy. Previously left in limbo, these projects are now finally moving forward, helping to put the region at the forefront of the green hydrogen revolution.
This follows the Government’s commitment of £22bn for carbon capture facilities, along with a new announcement today of a huge £70bn earmarked for the new National Wealth Fund to invest in industries, gigafactories, and ports “to drive forward our modern industrial strategy”.
Luke Myer MP commented, “This funding announcement is fantastic news for our region. It not only puts our area at the centre of an emerging clean energy industry but also promises new, high-quality jobs and local investment. Supporting projects like Tees Green Hydrogen will drive economic growth while helping us meet our climate goals. This is exactly the kind of long-term thinking we need to see.”
Hydrogen UK’s Head of Policy, Brett Ryan, also welcomed the “much anticipated formal announcement on the government’s commitment to these clean energy sectors.”
