Luke visits Teesside Beam Mill to back local steel jobs

Luke Myer MP visited Teesside Beam Mill in Lackenby this week (April 2026), seeing first-hand the world-class steelmaking that continues to play an important role in Teesside’s economy.

Joined by Nicola Wells, Regional Organiser at Community Union, Luke met with Plant Manager Lee Sotherby for a discussion on the opportunities and challenges at the site and a tour of the process from start to finish.

The Teesside Beam Mill is the only site in the UK producing heavy steel sections for major construction projects, with Teesside-made steel used in landmarks from Heathrow to the London skyline. During the visit, Luke spoke with workers on the shop floor and saw up close the scale, skill and precision involved in producing these vital materials.

The visit comes as the Government sets out a new Steel Strategy to back domestic production and strengthen supply chains for infrastructure, energy and defence. Luke also used the visit to highlight the importance of backing British steel through procurement, supporting the “Save Steel Buy British” campaign alongside industry and trade unions.

Luke Myer MP said:

“Teesside Beam Mill is a site our whole area and country can be proud of, with local workers producing world-class steel. The government’s new Steel Strategy is about backing jobs at sites like this – but now we need to go further too. I’m supporting British Steel and Community’s ‘Save Steel Buy British’ campaign to call on UK industry to back our steel sector.”

“When we invest in our own industry, we support skilled local jobs and make sure we keep that strength for the future.”

As chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Steel & Metals-Related Industries, and Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland, Luke continues to work locally and nationally to support our steel industry.
