Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Luke Myer has shown his support for local pharmacies after attending the launch of the Local Pharmacies: Shot in the Arm campaign in Parliament on Monday 20 October.

The event, organised by the Independent Pharmacies Association (IPA), brought together pharmacists, parliamentarians, and healthcare leaders to highlight the essential role community pharmacies play in supporting patients — particularly during the busy winter months.

Luke met with representatives from Ascent Pharmacy, which operates Coulby Newham Pharmacy on Cropton Way, Middlesbrough. The pharmacy is open seven days a week and provides a range of vital healthcare services for local residents. Founded in 2005, Ascent Pharmacy is a pharmacist-led partnership group with around 60 community pharmacies across the UK. Its model is based on collaboration with local pharmacists to deliver high-quality, accessible healthcare close to home.

The Independent Pharmacies Association, led by Chief Executive Dr Leyla Hannbeck, represents privately owned community pharmacies across England and Wales. The Association campaigns for fair funding and reduced red tape for pharmacists, who deliver millions of vaccinations and frontline healthcare services every year.

“Community pharmacies are the backbone of local healthcare — they’re often the first place people turn to for advice, prescriptions, and vaccinations. Here in Teesside, we’re lucky to have fantastic pharmacists like those at Coulby Newham Pharmacy, working long hours to keep our communities healthy.

“As we head into winter, it’s vital that pharmacies have the support and resources they need to meet demand. I’ll continue working with organisations like the Independent Pharmacies Association and our local NHS partners to make sure that happens.”
