Further to yesterday’s joint statement on British Steel negotiations, Luke Myer MP has spoken out today about the talks.

In Parliament, he called on British Steel’s Chinese owner, Jingye, to stop the threats and return to the negotiating table.

He also demanded “strong national intervention” from Government if a deal cannot be done.

Following this, Luke and Anna Turley MP spoke to ITV News to reiterate their view that Jingye must return to the talks, and that primary steelmaking must remain in the UK.

Luke has consistently raised the issue of the Teesside steel industry in Parliament, has met with Government ministers to discuss the issue, and previously called on Government to “not be afraid to make the big fiscal choices required to protect” steel as “a strategically important industry” and put the industry “on a sure footing in the years ahead”.
