Luke Myer MP has launched a petition against the implementation of the ParkingEye system at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The petition challenges a system that many believe unfairly penalises vulnerable individuals, especially those arriving in emergencies.

Media commentary has put ParkingEye’s approach under scrutiny – The Independent labelling the company as “cashing in on the sick.” The company’s business model relies on issuing Parking Charge Notices (PCNs) – with the company being the UK’s biggest requester of DVLA data, which they need to send drivers a bill.

In many parts of the country, ParkingEye also requires drivers to pay upfront – estimating the length of their visit when they enter the car park. This can be particularly problematic for hospital patients, who have no way of predicting how long they will need to remain at the hospital. NHS parking guidance clearly states that parking charges “should only be imposed where reasonable and should be waived when overstaying is beyond the driver’s control.”

Luke Myer MP commented on the situation, stating:

“I do not believe that this system should be forced upon sick patients and hardworking NHS staff. This company’s model has been described as ‘aggressive’ and ‘punitive’. It’s plain wrong to charge patients for being treated, or to charge staff for saving lives.

“Don’t let ParkingEye cash in on the sick – sign our petition and let’s get some proper consultation.”
