A job well done for Middlesbrough Council!

Middlesbrough Council’s ongoing efforts to improve governance and operations have been recognised by the government, marking a significant step forward for the authority. Following a Best Value Notice issued in January 2023, due to serious concerns, the Council has since made remarkable strides, leading to the government’s decision not to re-issue the notice after its review earlier this year.

This achievement reflects the Council’s substantial progress in addressing leadership, governance, and financial sustainability challenges. With the implementation of a comprehensive improvement plan and the establishment of a strong leadership team, Middlesbrough Council is now being acknowledged for its hard work and commitment to positive change.

In a congratulatory letter to Mayor Chris Cooke, Jim McMahon MP, Minister for Local Government, praised the Council’s improvements and the key role that Cooke has played in steering the organisation towards a better future. This letter is not only a recognition of past efforts but also an encouragement to continue driving forward, addressing the remaining challenges with renewed energy and focus.

Luke Myer MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland also extended his congratulations to Mayor Cooke, writing:

“Dear Chris,

I am writing to extend my sincere congratulations on receiving the recent letter from Jim McMahon, Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution. The decision not to reissue a Best Value Notice to Middlesbrough Council at this time marks a significant and positive milestone for the Council.

It is commendable that the department has acknowledged the substantial progress Middlesbrough Council has made, particularly in addressing leadership issues, implementing the improvement plan, and establishing robust systems for cultural, governance, and financial sustainability improvements. The endorsement from the Independent Improvement & Assurance Board highlights the positive direction in which the Council is moving, even as it continues to tackle ongoing challenges.

Your dedication and efforts in steering the Council’s improvement journey are crucial, and I am confident that with continued focus, the progress achieved will be effectively maintained and built upon. I look forward to seeing further advancements in the coming months and am optimistic about the future of Middlesbrough Council.

Congratulations once again on this notable achievement. If there is any way I can assist or support your work further, please feel free to reach out.”

This development comes alongside the news that the Department for Education has also withdrawn its involvement with Middlesbrough’s Children’s Services, reinforcing the Council’s positive momentum in addressing a range of critical areas.

Interim Chief Executive Clive Heaphy praised the staff, councillors, and leadership for their dedication, while also acknowledging that more work lies ahead. Nonetheless, the Council is in a stronger position to continue delivering essential services and further improve its processes to benefit the residents of Middlesbrough.

With this progress, Middlesbrough Council is well on its way to overcoming its past challenges, and the future is looking brighter for the town and its residents.
