Luke Myer MP Calls for Radical Reset of Nuclear Regulations

25 November 2025

Luke Myer MP has joined a group of Labour MPs in calling on the Prime Minister for a radical overhaul of the UK’s nuclear regulations.

Their intervention follows the publication of the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce’s final report, which warns that Britain is currently the most expensive place in the world to build a nuclear power station. The Taskforce, led by former Office of Fair Trading chief executive John Fingleton, found that the current system is too complex, too slow, and too risk averse. According to the report, long delays and repeated layers of bureaucracy have held back new projects and pushed up costs for taxpayers.

The review recommends simplifying the system, removing unnecessary duplication, and creating a single, streamlined approval process that still keeps strong safety standards in place. It argues that these changes are needed to restore the UK’s global competitiveness and get vital nuclear projects delivered on time.

Luke, who sits on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Nuclear Energy, has consistently advocated for investment in nuclear power (Sept ’24Feb ’25June ’25Sept ’25). For Teesside, this growing national programme has seen recent progress at Hartlepool, where Centrica and X-energy plan to deploy up to 12 Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs). The Hartlepool project is expected to generate up to 2,500 skilled jobs for the Tees Valley region, provide clean power for 1.5 million homes, and unlock around £12 billion in economic value.

Following the Taskforce report, Luke and seven fellow Labour MPs have written to the Prime Minister urging the government to accept all of the recommendations in full. They say the UK now has a once in a generation opportunity to build the clean, secure energy infrastructure needed for the future.

Luke has consistently championed nuclear as part of a homegrown energy mix. He believes that reforming the nuclear system is essential for energy security and for unlocking high quality jobs in regions like Teesside.

Luke Myer MP said:
“Teesside has the skills and ambition to lead Britain’s clean energy future. We need a system that helps good projects get built, not one that holds them back.

These reforms are about delivering secure, affordable power and backing the communities that can help build it.”
